Friends

by Trixie Asirvatham

We always say we'll stay in touch
But then it's not to be…
New things to do come in the way
And keep us "too busy",

No time to think of good times past
Of friendship warm and true
Maybe it's just too good to last,
Vanishing like morning dew.

I reach through the fog of forgetfulness
To recapture old joys anew,
But they seem so faint and far away,
Half-hidden by a misty veil.

Unreal, unclear they seem to be
Those elusive feelings of old,
The things that drove me to joy or despair
Have lost their power to hold.

But wait! Like stray sunbeams through the clouds
Some faces look back at me…
And bring back the glow of those pleasant times
Of laughter and good company.

And then, overcome with remorse, I snatch
Pen and paper and dash off a line
And as I write, I call to mind
Those companions of yesteryear.

A friend influences the way we think,
The way we act and feel,
A friend leaves a special mark on our souls,
And becomes a part of ourselves.

And then when it's time to move on, we find
We don't leave our friends behind
They've become so much a part of us…
They're with us, wherever we go.

If only we set aside some time
From our busy lives of today
For yesterday's friends, how much richer we'd be
In loving fraternity!

If we gave a little more of ourselves,
How much we'd get in return!
So make some time for new friends today
But forget not those of yesterday.
